THE REAL BUSES
The Leyland National single deck bus was developed as a joint venture between British Leyland and the National Bus Company during the late 1960's. The First production examples entered service in the early 1970's, and soon became the standard single deck bus for almost all the National Bus Company fleets.
The original Leyland National design was updated during the early 1980's resulting in the National mark II. The main difference was the re-positioning of the radiator from the rear to the front grille, which gave the vehicles their distinctive front bustle.
The National production finally ceased in the late 1980's when following de-regulation, the demand for large single deck vehicles was at an all time low.
THE EFE MODELS
The dual door version of the long Leyland National mark II made it's first appearance in 1999 with first single door version following in 2001, both model variations are based on an 11.6 metre version of the National. The models use the same basic body casting as the mark I version of the National, but are fitted with a revised front panel and rear engine cover. The real mark II buses had a somewhat more bulbous front profile with a more raked windscreen than that depicted on these models.
Only three of the possible six model series variations reserved by EFE have been produced and it seems very unlikely that any vehicles were actually produced with the comninations reserved for series 154, 155 & 176.
Models depicting the shorter 10.6 metre version of the bus can be found in the Short Leyland National Mark II section..
NOTE : The first example of the single door version without roof pod was issued incorrectly in the 174xx series, subsequent releases have correctly been given catalogue numbers in the reserved 177xx series however.
