THE REAL BUSES
The Leyland National single deck bus was developed as a joint venture between British Leyland and the National Bus Company during the late 1960's. The First production examples entered service in the early 1970's, and soon became the standard single deck bus for almost all the National Bus Company fleets.
The original Leyland National design was updated during the early 1980's resulting in the National mark II. The main difference was the re-positioning of the radiator from the rear to the the front grille, which gave the vehicles their distinctive front bustle.
The National production finally ceased in the late 1980's when following de-regulation, the demand for large single deck vehicles was at an all time low.
THE EFE MODELS
The single door version of the short Leyland National mark II made it's first appearance in mid 1993 with first dual door version following at the end of the same year, all the model variations are based on an 10.6 metre version of the real National.
The model uses the same basic body casting as the mark I version, but is fitted with a revised front panel and engine cover. The real mark II buses had a somewhat more bulbous front profile and raked windscreen than that depicted on these model.
Only three of the possible six model series variations reserved by EFE have been produced and it seems very unlikely that any vehicles were actually produced with the comninations reserved for series 148, 170 & 171.
Models depicting the longer 11.6 metre version of the bus can be found in the Long Leyland National Mark II section..
